No. 7 Chargers Fall to No. 19 Triton, Will Host Elgin Saturday in Region Tourney Opener

GALESBURG — The seventh-ranked Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team closed the regular season with a 4-1 loss to No. 19 Triton on a misty Thursday night at Van Dyke Field.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Chargers (14-3 overall, 11-3 Region IV), who earned the No. 2 seed on their half of the Region IV Division II tournament and will host third-seeded Elgin at noon Saturday at Kleine Field.

Triton (13-2), which earned the top seed in the tournament by winning its eighth in a row, scored the game’s opening goal in the closing moments of the first half. In the 43rd minute, the Trojans’ Konrad Madej sent a service from the far corner into the box. Luis Aviles headed the ball off the crossbar and down over the goal line.

Triton doubled its lead in the 74th minute as Patryk Szatko was taken down in the box by the Chargers’ Kyle Neacy, and the Trojans’ Maciej Rzadkosz converted the penalty for a 2-0 advantage.

Triton added a pair of late goals on headers off corner kicks before Roldy Geneus (Orlando, Fla./Evans) got the Chargers on the board with a rebound off a corner kick.

Chargers keeper Ben Hilton (West Sussex, England/Crawley Town Academy) stopped 11 shots on goal in the loss.
